Hump Day Hookerry

I am REALLY,REALLY, REALLY behind on my cable blanket I have been finding it quite difficult to get the squares all the same size.. the squares have been redone and still not to my expectations I have one more to do with square two cable pattern  if I don't decide to redo one of the squares

If I get to 10 complete squares and still have all my hair I might finish it :) ... usually hooky time is my relaxing spa moments of the day.. but this blanket has not been a calming experience ..maybe that's why its taking so long oh.... what's that word procrastination or aggravation

Monday Recipe

BRAN MUFFIN

This is the recipe I started with yes it's an allrecipe again why switch when every recipe Ive tried that has had good ratings with more than 100 reviews has been good.. just know that just because a recipe from there might have a five star rating if it only has one review that review is probably the person that wrote the recipe :)... so look at the amount of reviews and star ratings you'll be safe that way ..this bran muffin recipe called for 1  1/2 cups of wheat bran I switched it out for bran flake cereal instead that is what I had in the pantry and added a half cup of honey I like mine on the sweet side... they are really good but my kiddos heard bran and wouldn't touch them I had two bananas sitting around and since we were gone last week they needed to be used up so they had banana muffins thank goodness I made those or the bran muffins would of got me in a world of trouble

Recipe makes 1 dozen
 1 1/2 cups wheat bran
 1 cup buttermilk
 1/3 cup vegetable oil
 1 egg
 2/3 cup brown sugar
 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
 1 cup all-purpose flour
 1 teaspoon baking soda
 1 teaspoon baking powder
 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners.
2. Mix together wheat bran and buttermilk; let stand for 10 minutes.
3. Beat together oil, egg, sugar and vanilla and add to buttermilk/bran mixture. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Stir flour mixture into buttermilk mixture, until just blended. Fold in raisins and spoon batter into prepared muffin tins.
4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Cool and enjoy!

The recipe I used for the banana muffins I just found at this blog last night
http://simpledailyrecipes.com/ and it looks pretty good
(she seems to have a lot of unprocessed natural food recipes)
now I was out of buttermilk ( I used it all up in the bran muffins) so my substitutions for buttermilk was vanilla yogurt and sour cream the youngins ate two without sitting down... I would have to say they were a hit

Makes 15 yummy muffins.

  • 2 1/3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 small ripe bananas, mashed (1 to 1 1/2 cups)
  • 2/3 cup canola oil
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • 3 eggs
HEAT OVEN TO 350ºF. Grease muffin pan with oil.
Sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
Whisk all the wet ingredients in a medium bowl.  Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture.  Fold together with a rubber spatula until all the dry ingredients are absorbed.  Try not to over mix the batter.  Using a 2-inch scooper, scoop out enough batter to fill each muffin cup 2/3 full.
Bake 17 to 20 minutes, until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.  The tops should be light golden with darker golden edges.

Friday Foto ...And Apologies

If Hope Grew On A Bush
If hope grew on a bush,
And joy grew on a tree,
What a nosegay for the plucking
There would be!
But oh! in windy autumn,
When frail flowers wither,
What should we do for hope and joy,
Fading together?

Oh My Goodness Life has gotten away from me this week and I do apologize for not popping in with post ...this week has been crazy ..we went back to the house, the house, the one I talk about constantly obbsess over the one which I loved...we arrived at 10 pm at night and I stepped out of the car and immediately started pulling weeds from the flower beds without even unpacking without going in ..I was devasted the yard was a wreck... Ox opened the door to the house and let the kiddos in came back out and tried to talk to me in the mist of my insanity .... I had to compose myself I had so many feelings stirring up inside of me I knew that I had to calm the tornado before I spoke...My house, My home, My little plot of paradise looked abandoned and desolate it was heart wrenching. Ox tried to comfort me but there was nothing anyone could of said at that point...he said what would be best was for me to get some sleep come on in we'll talk in the morning. The Morning came and I woke forgetting where I was this strange place wasn't my home anymore it was a house yes but not my home  ...it was eye opening to wake and realize it isn't the house.. It's the home I make for my family that counts I can't let an apartment get in the way of making a home a place of comfort wherever God leads us ... I am truly blessed even in this valley I'm in right now I know if Ox and I climb the mountain together we will find our hilltop

OF COURSE WE CAN'T FORGET IRISH CROCHET
isn't it lovely

Irish Crochet wedding dress, from the UK Knitting and Crochet Guild's wonderful collection

Irish lace has always been an important part of the Irish needlework tradition. When times were hard, women had to find ways of supporting their family. This was particularly true during and after the great potato famine of the 1840s During that time period, most women could do needlework, so it was only a short step to lace-making. Irish Crochet and Tatting traveled particularly well as equipment needed was simple, a ball of cotton and a shuttle for Tatting and simple crochet hook and cotton for Irish Crochet lace

Now to Show you What this has all been leading up to
What I've been working on for weeks now, slaving over pulling my hair out over, deciphering what patterns to use, how to connect it together, where to connect it, how many chains, how long should it be, oh my goodness its been nerve racking having the design in my head and no pattern and promising they would be ready by St. Patrick's Day as you know its been trial and error taking apart and putting together and of course going to one yarn store after another trying to find the size and color of yarn needed. I kind of did a bleep, bleep, bleep a couple of times and a why did I ever decide to do this more than a couple ..but you ask was it worth it ...Holy Toledos!!!  Yes, Yes, Yes!!!

SURPRISE

My St.Patrick's Day Crochet Panties

Well no modeling of these Patty Panties today maybe tomorrow for my life moments I'll share photos ...and hopefully I will have permission to tell the story of the panties and who the lucky owner will be

Tuesday Thinkers "FRIENDSHIP"

There is nothing too little for so little creature as man.--- It is by studying little things we attain the great art of having as little misery and as much happiness as possible.----- Samuel Johnson

I bookmarked this quote and  checked up on who Samuel Johnson was The Decay of Friendship caught my eye so thought I'd share it ...its a longie but a goodie

Samuel Johnson 1709–1784

Samuel Johnson, the premier English literary figure of the mid- and late eighteenth century, was a writer of exceptional range: a poet, a lexicographer, a translator, a journalist and essayist, a travel writer, a biographer, an editor, and a critic.

The Decay of Friendship, by Samuel Johnson
"The most fatal disease of friendship is gradual decay"
By Richard Nordquist, About.com Guide
The Decay of Friendship, by Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)
For more than three years British author, poet, and lexicographer Samuel Johnson almost single-handedly wrote and edited a biweekly journal, The Rambler. After completing his master work, A Dictionary of the English Language, in 1755, he returned to journalism by contributing essays and reviews to the Literary Magazine and The Idler, where the following essay first appeared.
Of the "innumerable causes" of decayed or destroyed friendships, Johnson examines five in particular.
The Decay of Friendship
from The Idler, Number 23, September 23, 1758
by Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)
Life has no pleasure higher or nobler than that of friendship. It is painful to consider that this sublime enjoyment may be impaired or destroyed by innumerable causes, and that there is no human possession of which the duration is less certain.
Many have talked in very exalted language, of the perpetuity of friendship, of invincible constancy, and unalienable kindness; and some examples have been seen of men who have continued faithful to their earliest choice, and whose affection has predominated over changes of fortune, and contrariety of opinion.
But these instances are memorable, because they are rare. The friendship which is to be practiced or expected by common mortals, must take its rise from mutual pleasure, and must end when the power ceases of delighting each other.
Many accidents therefore may happen by which the ardor of kindness will be abated, without criminal baseness or contemptible inconstancy on either part. To give pleasure is not always in our power; and little does he know himself who believes that he can be always able to receive it.
Those who would gladly pass their days together may be separated by the different course of their affairs; and friendship, like love, is destroyed by long absence, though it may be increased by short intermissions. What we have missed long enough to want it, we value more when it is regained; but that which has been lost till it is forgotten, will be found at last with little gladness, and with still less if a substitute has supplied the place. A man deprived of the companion to whom he used to open his bosom, and with whom he shared the hours of leisure and merriment, feels the day at first hanging heavy on him; his difficulties oppress, and his doubts distract him; he sees time come and go without his wonted gratification, and all is sadness within, and solitude about him. But this uneasiness never lasts long; necessity produces expedients, new amusements are discovered, and new conversation is admitted.
No expectation is more frequently disappointed, than that which naturally arises in the mind from the prospect of meeting an old friend after long separation. We expect the attraction to be revived, and the coalition to be renewed; no man considers how much alteration time has made in himself, and very few inquire what effect it has had upon others. The first hour convinces them that the pleasure which they have formerly enjoyed, is forever at an end; different scenes have made different impressions; the opinions of both are changed; and that similitude of manners and sentiment is lost which confirmed them both in the approbation of themselves.
Friendship is often destroyed by opposition of interest, not only by the ponderous and visible interest which the desire of wealth and greatness forms and maintains, but by a thousand secret and slight competitions, scarcely known to the mind upon which they operate. There is scarcely any man without some favorite trifle which he values above greater attainments, some desire of petty praise which he cannot patiently suffer to be frustrated. This minute ambition is sometimes crossed before it is known, and sometimes defeated by wanton petulance; but such attacks are seldom made without the loss of friendship; for whoever has once found the vulnerable part will always be feared, and the resentment will burn on in secret, of which shame hinders the discovery.
This, however, is a slow malignity, which a wise man will obviate as inconsistent with quiet, and a good man will repress as contrary to virtue; but human happiness is sometimes violated by some more sudden strokes.
A dispute begun in jest upon a subject which a moment before was on both parts regarded with careless indifference, is continued by the desire of conquest, till vanity kindles into rage, and opposition rankles into enmity. Against this hasty mischief, I know not what security can be obtained; men will be sometimes surprised into quarrels; and though they might both haste into reconciliation, as soon as their tumult had subsided, yet two minds will seldom be found together, which can at once subdue their discontent, or immediately enjoy the sweets of peace without remembering the wounds of the conflict.
Friendship has other enemies. Suspicion is always hardening the cautious, and disgust repelling the delicate. Very slender differences will sometimes part those whom long reciprocation of civility or beneficence has united. Lonelove and Ranger retired into the country to enjoy the company of each other, and returned in six weeks, cold and petulant; Ranger's pleasure was to walk in the fields, and Lonelove's to sit in a bower; each had complied with the other in his turn, and each was angry that compliance had been exacted.
The most fatal disease of friendship is gradual decay, or dislike hourly increased by causes too slender for complaint, and too numerous for removal. Those who are angry may be reconciled; those who have been injured may receive a recompense: but when the desire of pleasing and willingness to be pleased is silently diminished, the renovation of friendship is hopeless; as, when the vital powers sink into languor, there is no longer any use of the physician

My Thinker ... He hit the nail on the head....as the saying goes you have to be a friend to have a friend

Monday Recipes ...Granny's Chocolate Pie

photo
http://www.flickr.com/photos/milkaway/475923677/

This recipe is near and dear to our hearts my Ox loved his Granny's cooking she was a down home southern cookin lady and nothing came out of her kitchen that wasn't the epitome of the south.. Now I had never heard of chocolate pie?? chocolate silk pie, yes, but my Ox said," You haven't had nothing like Granny's Chocolate Pie its the best thing you'll ever taste," and he was gall darn right I was smitten my first bite..I could eat the whole pie if my family would let me, but they always say I have to share,( I always have the sneaky notion to say Why I made it) I always make two though because between the 5 of us just one pie will not do and most of the time two doesn't suffice... This Chocolate Pie is on the table at every family gathering in this house first in foremost to celebrate Granny's Memory ... but have to say for everyone eating it, its the joy of devouring this delicious pie

Granny's Chocolate Pie

1 1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
4 Tbsp. corn starch
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups Half and Half
3 egg yolks

-Have one prepared pie crust ready *** remember homemade is always best, take the extra time you will be a lot happier :)**
-add every things except yolks to a high sided sauce pan
-(please have whisk in hand stirring this mixture at all times it might be a good pie but a tasking pie to make)
-cook over medium heat until thick
-(this will take a while)
-remove from heat and temper in those egg yolks remember to temper you don't want chocolate scrambled eggs
-return pan to burner over medium heat return mixture to boil for one minute
-remove from heat
+++mix in 1 Tbsp. of butter and 1 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract to chocolate
-and pour into pie crust
-best to chill over night but at least 3 hours
those three extra egg whites can be turned into meringue and baked on top... my family does not like meringue so I don't make it ....also cool whip is an alternative topping...  my family is easy they just want the chocolate all of it
